Using the 'Find an apprenticeship' service is one of the main ways - and sometimes the only - of applying for certain apprenticeships with certain employers these days, so it's vitally important that your application is as strong as it can be to get noticed and get ahead. You may be great in person, but if you can't get past the application stage, what's the use?
As an employer, there's nothing more flattering than when an applicant has taken the time to respond to your job description in detail and taken the time to address the criteria and show their enthusiasm for your vacancy and your company. And when they don't...well, it's very frustrating!!
Here are some particularly common mistakes (and annoyances) we've noticed:
1. Not checking spelling or grammar (AND USING CAPITALS THROUGHOUT!!)
2. Applying for the 'wrong' apprenticeship. Old friend 'Copy & Paste' at fault. Recent example: someone applying for Carpentry apprenticeship but explaining how motivated they were to learn about Car Mechanics...yes, really.
3. Applying for 'any' apprenticeship. When the responses are so brief and vague, they might have been auto-generated by a bot. Recent example: "I am keen to learn all tasks associated with this apprenticeship and can meet all your criteria". A sure sign that their heart isn't really in it, we'd say!
So, take a look at our handy tips and hints sheet below, and have a think about these when you're putting together your application. Doing this and taking your time to put together a killer application can make all the difference. Good luck!
